Physicians

Dr. David Wheeler joined IDP in 1996 after directing the Adult HIV Program at the University of Maryland. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Virginia, where he earned the Outstanding Medical Student citation upon graduating in 1982, and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado, where he was selected as an outstanding teaching resident. He completed his infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Maryland, where he focused on the treatment of the emerging epidemic of HIV. In his role as IDP’s managing partner he works closely with his fellow physicians and staff to ensure excellent, attentive service to all patients and referring physicians, as well as continuing to evaluate the best models of providing care.
Dr. Wheeler is Professor of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. In that role he participates in the training of young physicians in both the hospital and office settings. He is a fellow of the American College of physicians (FACP) and a fellow of the infectious diseases Society of America (FIDSA).
Dr. Wheeler works in the hospital, office, and clinical research settings. Within the specialty of infectious diseases, he has a particular interest in the treatment of chronic viral infections, including HIV and hepatitis. He has been a leader in HIV treatment in the Washington metropolitan area for the last 30 years. In addition to local, national, and international speaking, he has published in journals including Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice, Clinical Infectious Diseases, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the Journal of AIDS. He has been recognized by his regional peers as a Washingtonian Top Doctor.
Dr. Wheeler was raised as a young child in a diplomatic family and lived in several countries in Latin America in his early years. He is fluent in Spanish and conversant in Portuguese. Spending his teenage years in northern Virginia, he returned to raise his own family in a neighborhood near where he grew up. Since his return to the Washington DC area, he has continued collaboration with infectious diseases physicians throughout Latin America, particularly in Central America, on educational and training activities. He has also been involved in projects linking community groups to HIV treatment programs in Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America.

Dr. Sujata Ambardar joined IDP in 1998. She received her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and her medical degree from Temple University School Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1990. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Washington Hospital Center and her Infectious Diseases fellowship at George Washington University hospital. She has been in private practice in Northern Virginia and an attending physician at Inova Fairfax hospital since 1998.
Dr. Ambardar is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and Georgetown University School of Medicine. She also mentors residents in the Internal Medicine Residency program at Inova Fairfax during their Infectious Diseases electives. She is a Fellow of the American College of physicians (FACP), and a member of Infectious Disease Society of America and Society (IDSA) for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).
Dr. Ambardar chairs the Infection Control Committee at Inova Fairfax medical Center and is the Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. She also chairs the antimicrobial subcommittee and is a member of the Inova Health System P&T Committee. She has presented at Inova Fairfax Hospital Grand Rounds on various topics and has participated in several studies and publications. She has been honored as a Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine.
Dr. Ambardar provides travel health care services assisting people who travel abroad with consultations on different infectious diseases prevalent around the world. She provides patients with guidance on recommended immunizations, prophylactic medications, and follow-up care if needed upon return.

Dr. Mark Delman joined IDP in 2011. He received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY in 2004. He completed his internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Dr. Delman is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He concentrates on the inpatient and outpatient consultative aspects of IDP’s clinical care. He is committed to the medical education process and has taught at student, resident and fellow level. In this capacity he has been recognized with multiple teaching awards. His clinical interests are difficult to diagnose diseases and opportunistic infections. Dr. Delman serves as the managing partner of IDP.

Dr. Aabha Jain joined Infectious Diseases Physicians (IDP) in 2016. She earned her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 2011, followed by residency training in Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital, completed in 2014. She went on to complete her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Drexel University College of Medicine in 2016.
Dr. Jain’s clinical practice includes inpatient infectious disease consultation and the management of patients in local skilled nursing facilities, including antimicrobial stewardship and infection control. She is an active member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and participates in teaching pharmacy residents through stewardship rounds.
She is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Patricia Dandache joined IDP in 2020 upon deciding to make Northern Virginia home for raising her young family. She received her medical degree from The Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon in 2002. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics followed by her fellowship in Infectious Disease at New York Medical College in 2008. Dr. Dandache has been in clinical practice since 2008 and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
Prior to joining IDP, Dr. Dandache held Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine appointments at Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is also a member of The Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). She has been an active leader in hospital antimicrobial stewardship as well as medical student infectious diseases education throughout her career. She has a special interest in managing cardiovascular, cardiac device, and musculoskeletal infections. Dr. Dandache provides inpatient infectious diseases consultative services at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Dr. Walid El-Nahal joined IDP in 2023. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, VA in 2015. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia Health System in 2018, and was subsequently appointed as an Internal Medicine Chief Resident, teaching, training, and supervising junior residents. He then completed his subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD in 2022. There he also acquired a Master of Health Science in clinical research from the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Prior to joining IDP, Dr. El-Nahal was a Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in the NIH Office of AIDS Research. There he served as a clinical advisor, supporting the office’s mission to advance HIV research towards ending the HIV epidemic. Throughout his training, Dr. El-Nahal was the recipient of several awards, including a Scholar Grant for Faculty Development from the Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research in 2022, the Leroy Dunn Award for Excellence in medical care in 2018, and the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017.
Dr. El-Nahal is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. In his current role at IDP he serves as an attending physician at Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Alexandria Hospital. He provides care on the inpatient general infectious diseases and transplant infectious diseases services. He also spends time teaching medical students and internal medicine residents at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Dr. Yoseph Aldras joined IDP in 2025. He received his medical degree from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in 2020 in Scranton, PA. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Brown University in 2023 in Providence, RI. He completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Temple University Hospital in 2025 in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Aldras is board certified in Internal Medicine. He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America. His special interest is in HIV medicine, and he has published on the topic. He provides consultative services at Inova Fairfax Hospital as well as Inova Alexandria Hospital.
Dr. Jennifer Makhoul joined IDP in 2025. She received her medical degree from Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She then went on to do her fellowship training in Infectious Diseases through the joint program at the University of Texas and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
Her clinical interests include infections in immunocompromised hosts, particularly patients with hematologic malignancies, as well as antimicrobial stewardship. She has contributed to multiple publications and is keen on continuing engagement in clinical research. She has also completed a Health Policy fellowship at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. Dr. Makhoul was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honor Medical Society and is an active member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
Dr. Makhoul is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. She currently sees patients at Inova Fairfax and Inova Alexandria Hospitals.

Dr. Alexander James Howells Ogilvy is an infectious diseases clinician. He received his medical degree from New York Medical College, completed his internal medicine residency at Westchester Medical Center, and completed his infectious diseases fellowship at George Washington University Hospital. He is interested in antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention, medical education, and research. Dr. Ogilvy provides consultation services at Inova Fairfax and Inova Alexandria Hospitals.
Nurse Practitioners

Kristen is an experienced Nurse Practitioner specializing in Infectious Diseases, dedicated to providing comprehensive care to patients both in the office and Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. With a strong foundation in nursing, Kristen earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Villanova University, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from George Washington University.
Prior to transitioning to infectious diseases, Kristen built a diverse clinical background in primary care, particularly in skilled nursing facilities, where she provided holistic care to patients with a wide range of conditions. This experience honed Kristen’s skills in patient assessment, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing her for the dynamic and complex nature of infectious diseases. Kristen strives to make a meaningful impact on patient health, fostering a compassionate and patient-centered environment while addressing the evolving challenges of infectious diseases. Kristen currently sees patients at our office, Inova Fairfax Hospital, and several Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) for IDP’s continuum of care program.

Ishmail joined IDP in 2015 to enhance the delivery of comprehensive and supportive care. He is degreed as a nurse practitioner and brings with him extensive nursing experience in the areas of community health, hospice, rehab and long-term care.
Ishmail received his nursing degree in 2010 and achieved the level of advanced practice nursing in 2015. Based on his training and experience, Ishmail is highly competent in executing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments and in patient education interactions.
